The Role of African American Women in the Black Church

Faith is a strong guiding force in the lives of many African American women. And for all that they receive from their spiritual communities, they give back even more. In fact, black women have long been regarded as the backbone of the black church. But their extensive and significant contributions are made as lay leaders, not as religious heads of churches. Women Are the Majority The congregations of African American churches are predominantly women, and the pastors of African American churches are nearly all male. Why arent black women serving as spiritual leaders? What do black female churchgoers think? And despite this apparent gender inequity in the black church, why does church life continue to be so important to so many black women? Daphne C. Wiggins, former assistant professor of congregational studies at Duke Divinity School, pursued this line of questioning and in 2004 published Righteous Content: Black Womens Perspectives of Church and Faith. The book revolves around two main questions: Why are women so faithful to the Black Church?How is the Black Church faring in the eyes of women? Devotion to the Church To find out the answers, Wiggins sought out women who attended churches representing two of the largest black denominations in the U.S., interviewing 38 women from Calvary Baptist Church and Layton Temple Church of God in Christ, both in Georgia. The group was diverse in age, occupation, and marital status. Marla Frederick of Harvard University, writing in The North Star: A Journal of African-American Religious History  reviewed Wiggins book and observed: ...Wiggins explores what women give and receive in their reciprocal alliance with the church....[She] examines how women themselves understand the mission of the black church...as the center of political and social life for African Americans. While women are still committed to the historic social work of the church, they are increasingly concerned about individual spiritual transformation. According to Wiggins, â€Å"the interpersonal, emotional or spiritual needs of church and community members were primary in the women’s minds, ahead of systemic or structural injustices†.... Wiggins captures the seeming ambivalence of lay women towards the need to advocate for more women clergy or for women in positions of pastoral leadership. While women appreciate women ministers, they are not inclined towards politically addressing the glass ceiling that is evident in most protestant denominations.... From the turn of the twentieth century to now various Baptist and Pentecostal communities have differed and splintered on the issue of women’s ordination. Nevertheless, Wiggins contends that the focus on ministerial positions might camouflage the real power that women wield in churches as trustees, deaconesses and members of mothers’ boards. Gender Inequality Although gender inequity may not be of concern to many women in the black church, it is apparent to the men who preach from its pulpit. In an article entitled Practicing Liberation in the Black Church in the Christian Century, James Henry Harris, pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, and adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at Old Dominion ​University writes: Sexism against black women should...be addressed by black theology and the black church. Women in black churches outnumber men by more than two to one; yet in positions of authority and responsibility the ratio is reversed. Though women are gradually entering ministry as bishops, pastors, deacons and elders, many men and women still resist and fear that development. When our church licensed a woman to the preaching ministry over a decade ago, almost all the male deacons and many women members opposed the action by appealing to tradition and selected Scripture passages. Black theology and the black church must deal with the double bondage of black women in church and society. Two ways they can do so are, first, to treat black women with the same respect as men. This means that women who are qualified for ministry must be given the same opportunities as men to become pastors and to serve in such leadership positions as deacons, stewards, trustees, etc. Second, theology and the church must eliminate exclusionist language, attitudes or practices, however benign or unintended, in order to benefit fully from the talents of women. The Nature of Place in ‘The Chalk Pit’ by Edward Thomas...

‘The Chalk Pit’ by Edward Thomas and ‘The Woodpile’ by Robert Frost are both about being transported to a specific place and these places have an effect on the speaker(s). The setting of ‘The Chalk Pit’ is most likely at the foot of Wheatham Hill in Hampshire and nearby is an abandoned chalk mine. ‘The Woodpile’ is set in a frozen swamp/wood in wintertime. Both of the poems have similar settings and this verifies the fact that Frost and Thomas were both very similar people, both in poetry and in real life. Both poems are arranged in one large stanza. This is to keep the conversational nature of ‘The Chalk Pit’ flowing and realistic. Although ‘The Chalk Pit’ is essentially one large conversation, there is evidence of this speech or†¦show more content†¦This contrasts with the feeling of being included which is present in ‘The Woodpile’. The speaker in ‘The Woodpile’ is similar to speaker B in ‘The Chalk Pit’, in the sense that they are both very much deep thinking and inquisitive individuals. For example, the speaker in ‘The Woodpile’ is easily led by his surroundings, i.e. the small bird which he follows. He tries to imagine what the bird is thinking. This is known as anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is applying human attributes such as feelings and emotions to animals. As he tries to imagine what the bird is thinking, this provides a comic piece in the poem. He imagines that the bird is trying to maintain a distance from him, as if to think he is after its white tail feather. Speaker B in ‘The Chalk Pit’ is equally inquisitive as he tries to imagine the chalk pit being full of life and energy immediately before he and the other speaker enter. He uses the nouns ‘emptiness’, ‘silence’ and ‘stillness’, and then goes onto use the adjective form of these words. â€Å"...as if just before/It was not empty, silent, still but full/Of life of some kind, perhaps tragical†. This emphasises how abandoned and empty the chalk pit really is, but immediately contrasts with the idea that as soon as their backs are turned, the chalk pit comes to life. You feel

The House of Capulet in Romeo and Juliet

The House of Capulet in Romeo and Juliet is one of fair Verona’s two feuding families—the other being the House of Montague. Capulet’s daughter, Juliet, falls in love with Romeo, the son of Montague and they elope, much to the anger of their respective families. Heres a look at the major players in the House of Capulet. Capulet (Juliets Father) Hes head of the Capulet clan, married to Lady Capulet and father to Juliet. Capulet is locked in an on-going, bitter and unexplained dispute with the Montague family. Capulet is very much in charge and demands respect. He is prone to rage if he does not get his own way. Capulet loves his daughter very much but is out of touch with her hopes and dreams. He believes that she should marry Paris. Lady Capulet (Juliets Mother) Married to Capulet and mother to Juliet, Lady Capulet appears distanced from her daughter. It is interesting to note that Juliet receives most of her moral guidance and affection from the Nurse. Lady Capulet, who also married young, believes it was high time Juliet was married off and chooses Paris as the appropriate candidate. But when Juliet declines to marry Paris, Lady Capulet turns on her: Talk not to me, for Ill not speak a word; do as thou wilt, for I am done with thee. Lady Capulet takes the news of her nephew Tybalts death extremely hard, going so far as to wish death on his killer, Romeo. Juliet Capulet Our female protagonist is 13 years old and about to be married to Paris. However, Juliet soon stumbles upon her fate when she meets Romeo,  and instantly falls in love with him, despite him being the son of her family’s enemy. Over the course of the play, Juliet matures, making the decision to abandon her family to be with Romeo. But like most women in Shakespeares plays, Juliet has little personal freedom. Tybalt Lady Capulet’s nephew and Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt is antagonistic and has a deep hatred of the Montagues. He has a short temper and is quick to draw his sword when his ego is in danger of being damaged. Tybalt has a vindictive nature and is feared. When Romeo kills him, this is a major turning point in the play. Juliet’s Nurse A loyal maternal figure and friend to Juliet, the Nurse provides moral guidance and practical advice. She knows Juliet better than anyone else and provides comic relief in the play with her bawdy sense of humor. The Nurse has a disagreement with Juliet near the end of the play which demonstrates her lack of understanding about the intensity of Juliet’s feelings about love and about Romeo. Servants of the Capulets Samson: After the Chorus, he is the first character to speak and establishes the conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues. Gregory: Along with Samson, he discusses the tension in the Montague household. Peter: Illiterate and a bad singer,  Peter invites guests to the Capulets’ feast and escorts the Nurse to meet with Romeo.

The structure itself was approximately 44 metres across and it weighed 37 thousand tonnes. It is the duty of a seller of hot food to understand the value of time and quality of food (Shimomura Kimita, 2013). The same time the customers do not wish to have spicy and delicious heavy food early morning. Instead of cold leftover in the refrigerator Day Delicacies aims to serve their customers fresh hot foods. Moreover the service not only available in their residence but also at their place of work (Otnes Tuncay-Zayer, 2012). Competitive Advantage: Competitive advantage is the gain over extra benefit provided by one company in order to compete with another (Barney and Hesterly, 2010). Today companies invest highly on their strategic implementation of their innovative ideas. It provides an edge over a companys rivals to create more customer value for its consumers and shareholders. In the restaurant industry competitive advantage determines the sustenance of a restaurant (Hill and Jones, n.d.). Following the product or service differentiation the strategy of delivering packed hot breakfast to their customers is one of the competitive advantages of Day Delicacies over its competitors. Other restaurant chains serve deliverable foods after ten; their office workers who had to go to their work early in morning and who wish to have early breakfast would enjoy the service (Hassan Craft, 2012). Apart from that the freedom provided for customers to choose their flavors in any food product guarantees support to the innovative ideas of their customers. This attempt is not only to enable the customers have their choice of food but also to feel as a part of the restaurant (Reuvid, 2014).
