As a Public Area Attendant it is my duty to take care of the cleanliness and hygienist in all over my hotel. The fulfilments of employability requirements are necessary for the hotel and I have efficient skills to accomplish my duties. I can perform routine cleaning task such as restock any necessary supplies such as amenities, toiletries etc. I have interpersonal skill which covers the problem solving, verbal as well as non-verbal communication and decision making. I am confident towards my job role which encourages me to take decision as on my own behalf where management is not required. It is not possible that work can be done without any problems or issues, in such situation I can resolve the issue until it does not show the need of the higher authority for compromising. Required improvement However, the Crowne Plaza is effective hotel and provides the better quality services to the customers by giving proper training to the employees. The improvement should be done in the induction and training process because it is the first step for the new joining and new employees get better understanding about the polices and working style of the hotel. The mission, vision and core values of the hotel should be communicated in effective manner to the new employees and introduce new employees to the other staff members. The hiring process of the hotel is effective but the human resource department of the Crowne Plaza should motivate the employees before sending new candidates for interviews so that they can reduce their fear while interviewing. The staff of the hotel should be extended because there are so many departments in the hotel which require special attention for the growth of the hotel (Leonidou, Christodoulides, Kyrgidou Palihawadana, 2017). As a Public Area Attendant I h ave realized that there should be more staff in the housekeeping department because public area is the major area where all people come, sit and enjoy with their dear ones and cleanliness keeps them far from diseases. Due to arriving of lots of people at same place in large number can bring the issue of lack of cleanliness that is why it is required for the management to arrange the latest equipments of cleanliness so that tidiness can be maintained for a long time. Biggest achievement during placement My greatest achievement has been my strength during my placement. My strength is good communication skills and interpersonal skills which has attracted the interviewers. My skills are matched with the required job profile which helped me to get the opportunity to fill this job profile. It was my career goal to job in hotel industry as Public Area Attendant and got selected as same desire profile was my greatest achievement. I am satisfied with my job profile and salary package and it is done due to my skills. Satisfaction and job contentment is necessary for every kind of job profile and it is my biggest achievement when I get the same job profile as per my desire. I am very honest towards my work which pushes me to move ahead with loyalty. I was prepared for the interview and gathered the details of the hotel from the internet which helped me to get the sufficient knowledge about the hotel. Learn about Leadership I have learnt about leadership that it is necessary to improve the productivity of the workforce, increase emotional intelligence, growth of the confidence in team and improve the charisma and seriousness in the business operation. The development of leadership is integral because firm take on the personality of the leaders (Harrison, 2012). The training and development program of leadership is able to increase the productivity and promote harmony (Dries Pepermans, 2012). Appropriate leadership style should be accepted by the organization for attaining the goals of the organization. I have learnt the importance of leadership in the organization because without leaders guidance and motivation, followers cannot perform in well manner within the organization. I got the desired profile but my journey is not ended here. I just want to see myself at high position in the hotel industry in next 12 years. Efforts and smart work are necessary to get the good profile in the hotel industry and I have the ability to take advantage of my strength to attain the goals. Here are some ways to draw on to show how to make plans or goals a reality. I will accept the criticism and will not lose my hope. I will never die my passion of becoming a branch manager of my hotel. I will learn constantly not only related to my field rather about another department which would be helpful for me to expand my knowledge. Outcomes It is vital to have the better understanding about the hospitality and tourism industrys requirement for employment selection process. There is a special course of hotel management and other diploma related to job in hotel industry which is being offered by number of colleges. It is integral for the employees who want to make their career in hotel industry to have the number of skills such as interpersonal skill, good communication skill, problem solving skills, decision making skills and punctuality (Zhu, Sarkis Lai, 2013). The key performance competencies for success in the industry is providing motivational support, fostering teamwork, managing change and performance, developing others and interpersonal awareness (Vathanophas, 2006). It has been critically evaluated that the hospitality operations management program provides the skills of business and insight to work in a broad area within the versatile industry (Ayanda, 2011). It may include housekeeping operations, human resou rce planning, front desk management and food and beverage management. In the point of view of management, operations of the hospitality, events or tourism organization are required special attention from the government because it has the liability of number of people who travel from one place to another for different purposes (Fraj, Matute Melero, 2015). Employability at the global context is different in comparison of local level. If the hotel where I am working as a Public Area Attendant wants to expand its business at global range and send me to another country for the same department, in such case the liabilities, responsibilities and the required skills will change. One should have the different skills (communication skills, problem solving skills and many more) and confidence while handling the situation of over there. Professional network associations would be helpful to deliver the advantages to members of it (Aguinis Kraiger, 2009). Conference, seminars and meetings will be facilitated to connect with the employees from another country. Personal and professional action planning can be done by following some steps such as clarify the values, creating the personal mission statement, perform an audit to strengthen personal skills and determine the area of excellence. Strategic business objective of the organization has the huge importance and it can be accomplished with the support of interrelationship between various internal stakeholders (Wang, Hutchins Garavan, 2009). The role of internal stakeholder is vital as they are liable to carry out roles as outlined for project. The business objective of the organization can be attained effectively with the co-operation on internal stakeholders which includes mangers, directors, employees and management. Robin Hood Essays - English-language Films, Merry Men,

Robin Hood Robin Hood, by Paul Creswick, is a story of great triumph. Many people know the myth of Robin Hood, but they do not know the life of Robin Hood. It is a good novel to read if the reader likes stories of a true legend. Also, it is a novel that deals with friendship, motivation, action, bravery, and love. The novel is primarily based on friendship. The friends that Robin makes and the camaraderie they share makes this a terrific book. Living in the forest, away from the law, they are all outlaws and they are all there for each other when trouble presents its self. One example is when one of the outlaws, Little John,is about to be hung, the rest of the crew risked life and limb to save his life. A few of the members even died trying to help Little John escape, but they all knew that was the meaning of friendship. When one of the outlaws was sick or wounded, someone always stayed with them and made sure he got better. With their friendship came trust. All of the outlaws knew that they could trust each other, no matter what the situation presented. If one of the outlaws went into the city to buy goods, the others knew that he would not run off with the money or tell the Sheriff where they were hiding. A good example of that is when Will Stutely had a falling out with the gang. He went and worked in the sheriff's kitchen as a cook, and even though he had left the gang and was employed by the law, he still kept the hiding place secret and told noone the where abouts of Robin Hood. Another reason the novel is good to read is the motivation the gang has. Their primary motivator is freedom. Everything they do is to try to gain freedom from the crooked king. They live in caves throughout the woods and sleep on the hard ground because they are just glad to be free there. In the forest, they make their own laws and obide by them strictly. If someone does not obey the laws set by the gang, then they are kicked out of the forest and must live in the non-democratic city and give up their freedom. Once the gang leaves the forest though, they have no respect for any laws but their own. Their secondary motivator is money. They do not obtain money honestly. They rob the rich people that travel through the forest and give it to the people that are traveling through the forest that need it, as long as they promise to pay it back. An example from the book is where a Knight that owes a rich Bishop two hundred dollars is traveling through and meets Robin and the gang. After Robin tried to rob the Knight, the Knight tells him that he is poor and owes the Bishop money he had borrowed to feed his family. Robin gave the Knight the two hundred dollars that Robin had stole from the Bishop in the first place. The Knight took the money, but had to promise to pay it back in one year. So unlike the myth, Robin Hood did not give the poor people money, he loaned money. And if the person couldn't pay it back, they couldn't borrow it. But, that is how many of the people joined Robin's gang. They wanted to be free of debt and obtain freedom, so they took the oath of friendship and were in the gang. If an action/adventure book is what a reader is looking for, I would have to say that few books compare with Robin Hood. From the opening page until the end, there is always something going on. On every walk Robin takes, he gets into a fight with somebody. A few words of disrespect towards Robin are spoken, and the sword is out. Usually, after the fight, Robin and his opponent become friends, and a new member of the gang is found. That is how Robin met Little John, and a few other members of the gang. Facts About the Dwarf Seahorse The dwarf seahorse  (Hippocampus zosterae)  is a small seahorse  found in the Western Atlantic Ocean. They are also known as little seahorses or pygmy seahorses.   Description: The maximum length of a dwarf seahorse is just under 2 inches. Like many other seahorse species, it has a variety of color forms, which range from tan to green to almost black. Their skin may be mottled, have dark spots, and covered in tiny warts. These seahorses have a short snout, and a coronet on top of their head that is very high and column-like or knob-like in shape. In fact, their distribution coincides with the availability of seagrasses.  They may also be found in floating vegetation. They live in the Western Atlantic Ocean in southern Florida, Bermuda, Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. Feeding Dwarf seahorses eat small crustaceans  and tiny fish. Like other seahorses, they are ambush predators, and use  their long snout with a pipette-like motion  to suck in their food as it passes by. Reproduction The breeding season for dwarf seahorses runs from February to November. In captivity, these animals have been reported to mate for life. Dwarf seahorses have a complex, four phase  courtship ritual that involves color changes, performing vibrations while attached to a holdfast. They may also swim around their holdfast. Then the female points her head upward, and the male responds by also pointing his head upward. Then they rise up into the water column and intertwine tails.   Like other seahorses, dwarf seahorses are ovoviviparous, and the female produces eggs that are reared in the males brood pouch.  The female produces about 55 eggs which are about 1.3 mm in size. It takes about 11 days for the eggs to hatch into miniature seahorses which are about 8 mm in size.   Conservation and Human Uses This species is listed as  data deficient  on the  IUCN Red List  due to a lack of published data on population numbers or trends in this species. This species is threatened by habitat degradation, especially because they rely on such shallow habitat.  They also are caught as bycatch  and caught live in Florida waters for the aquarium trade. Tale of Troy or Iliad - The Story Behind the Trojan War During the time when gods were petty and cruel, three of the leading goddesses had a contest to determine who was most beautiful. They contended for the prize of Eris golden apple, an apple no less dangerous than the one in the story of Snow White, despite its lack of consumable poison. To make the contest objective, the goddesses hired a human judge, Paris (also called Alexander), son of the Eastern potentate, Priam of Troy. Since Paris was to be paid according to the largesse of the winner, the contest was really to see who provided the most attractive incentive. Aphrodite won hands down, but the prize she offered was the wife of another man. Paris, after seducing Helen while a guest in the palace of her husband, King Menelaus of Sparta, went blithely on his way back to Troy with Helen. This abduction and violation of all rules of hospitality launched 1000 (Greek) ships to bring Helen back to Menelaus. Meanwhile, King Agamemnon of Mycenae, summoned the tribal kings from all over Greece to come to the aid of his cuckolded brother. Two of his best men one a strategist and the other a great warrior were Odysseus (aka Ulysses) of Ithaca, who would later come up with the idea of the Trojan Horse, and Achilles of Phthia, who may have married Helen in the Afterlife. Neither of these men wanted to join the fray; so they each devised a draft-dodging ruse worthy of M.A.S.H.s Klinger. Odysseus feigned madness by plowing his field destructively, perhaps with mismatched draft animals, perhaps with salt (a powerful destructive agent used according to legend at least one other time by the Romans on Carthage). Agamemnons messenger placed Telemachus, Odysseus infant son, on the path of the plough. When Odysseus swerved to avoid killing him, he was recognized as sane. Achilles with blame for cowardice conveniently laid at the feet of his mother, Thetis was made to look like and live with the maidens. Odysseus tricked him with the lure of a peddlers bag of trinkets. All the other maidens reached for the ornaments, but Achilles grabbed the sword stuck in their midst. The Greek (Achaean) leaders met together at Aulis where they awaited Agamemnons command to set sail. When an inordinate amount of time had passed and the winds still remained unfavorable, Agamemnon sought the services of Calchas the seer. Calchas told him that Artemis was angry with Agamemnon perhaps because he had promised her his finest sheep as a sacrifice to the goddess, but when the time came to sacrifice a golden sheep, he had, instead, substituted an ordinary one and to appease her, Agamemnon must sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia .... Agamemnon and Achilles had received the young women Chryseis and Briseis as prizes of war or war brides. Chryseis was the daughter of Chryses, who was a priest of Apollo. Chryses wanted his daughter back and even offered a ransom, but Agamemnon refused. Calchas the seer advised Agamemnon on the connection between his behavior toward the priest of Apollo and the plague that was decimating his army. Agamemnon had to return Chryseis to the priest of Apollo if he wanted the plague to end. After much Greek suffering, Agamemnon agreed to the recommendation of Calchas the seer, but only on condition that he take possession of the war prize of Achilles Briseis as a replacement. A minor point to think about: When Agamemnon had sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia, he hadnt required his fellow Greek aristocrats to give him a new daughter. No one could stop Agamemnon. Achilles was enraged. The honor of the leader of the Greeks, Agamemnon, had been assuaged, but what about the honor of the greatest of the Greek heroes Achilles? Following the dictates of his own conscience, Achilles could no longer cooperate, so he withdrew his troops (the Myrmidons) and sat on the sidelines. With the help of fickle gods, the Trojans began to inflict heavy personal damages on the Greeks, as Achilles and the Myrmidons sat on the sidelines. Patroclus, Achilles friend (or lover), persuaded Achilles that his Myrmidons would make the difference in the battle, so Achilles let Patroclus take his men as well as Achilles personal armor so that Patroclus would appear to be Achilles in the battlefield. It worked, but since Patroclus was not so great a warrior as Achilles, Prince Hector, the noble son of Trojan King Priam, struck Patroclus down. What even Patroclus words had failed to do, Hector accomplished. The death of Patroclus spurred Achilles into action and armed with a new shield forged by Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods (as a favor for Achilles sea goddess mother Thetis) Achilles went into battle. Achilles soon avenged himself. After killing Hector, he tied the body to the back of his war chariot, The grief-maddened Achilles then dragged Hectors corpse through the sand and dirt for days. In time, Achilles calmed down and returned the corpse of Hector to his grieving father. In a later battle, Achilles was killed by an arrow to the one part of his body Thetis had held when she had dipped the baby Achilles into the River Styx to confer immortality. With Achilles death, the Greeks lost their greatest fighter, but they still had their best weapon. [Summary: The greatest of the Greek heroes Achilles was dead. The 10-year Trojan War, which had begun when the Greeks set sail to retrieve Menelaus wife, Helen, form the Trojans, was at a stalemate.] Crafty Odysseus devised a plan that ultimately doomed the Trojans. Sending all the Greek ships away or into hiding, it appeared to the Trojans that the Greeks had given up. The Greeks left a parting gift in front of the walls of the city of Troy. it was a giant wooden horse which appeared to be an offering to Athena a peace offering. Odysseus set out on the voyage (Homer, according to tradition, tells in The Odyssey, which is the sequel to The Iliad) that made him more famous than his help with Troy. And Aphrodites son, the Trojan hero Aeneas, set out from his burning homeland carrying his father on his shoulders on his way to Dido, in Carthage, and, finally, to the land that was to become Rome. The personal, cultural, and spiritual values that have contributed to my philosophy and worldview of nursing revolve around my experiences, family background and the society I grew up in. I was born and raised in the US and right from an early age, it was drilled into me that I should give my all in everything I laid my hands on. My parents also insisted on the same and this noble value became my inspiration, motivation and source of my nursing philosophy; that is, to uphold a high professional integrity and an ethically competent nursing practice. As a nurse, I have made it a point in my daily practice to give my best when caring for patients and their families. The personal values that have shaped my philosophy and worldview of nursing are responsibi lity and integrity. I have learned to take personal responsibility for everything I do and say and take the blame, however hard it is. Taking responsibility has helped me maintain the hardwork mindset inbuilt in me and has motivated me to be consistent with my actions and principles. From my cultural background, I have learned that honesty and humility are important stepping-stones to success and I have learned to be humble and honest to my patients to the most practicable extend. This has helped me attain a good professional relationship as it encourages them to open up and cooperate. As a Christian, I hold a high regard for respect for all people and in every situation. In my nursing profession, I always ensure that I act respectfully towards my patients and their families in order to show to them that they matter greatly and that they are not just another patient or customers of healthcare. Apart from these, the value of doing unto others as I would love them to do for me has als o been of great importance in shaping my philosophy and worldview of nursing. As a nurse, I always give my patients the same quality of care I would love to be given if I were in the same situation as them. All these values act as the motivators and drivers behind my efforts to attain my nursing philosophy. Just as outlined by Scanlon and Glover (1995), these values have served as my guide for developing an ethically competent nursing practice. In nursing practice, values refer to enduring beliefs held by nurses regarding the worth of their patients, professional ideas and practice whereas morals refer to rightful way of conduct that is expected of nurses as they interact with their patients and their families. They are able to have a profound and extra-ordinary effect on their followers, these are transformational leaders (Robbins and Judge, 2005). Transformational leaders are are charismatic in nature and have the ability to provide individualized consideration and intellectual simulation (Robbins and Judge, 2005). Transformational leaders pay attention to the concerns and development needs of individualized followers; they change followers’ awareness of issues by helping them to look at old problems in new ways, and are therefore able to excite, arouse and inspire followers to put in extra effort to achieve group goals (Robbins and Judge, 2005). Analysis Leadership at the top is never easy for even the most experienced people. For someone taking on the job of CEO for the first time, mastering the new skills and sorting out the uncertainties that go with the position can be an overwhelming challenge. The fact is that for most of the CEOs especially the freshly appointed ones it is exceedingly difficult to familiarize themselves with the responsibilities and the risks that are associated with the job, and usually it requires some time and experience before they can deliver. The Centre for Creative Leadership has estimated that 40% of new CEOs fail in their first 18 months (Dan Ciampa 2005). What’s more, the churn rate is on the rise: In a 2002 study, the centre found that the number of CEOs leaving their jobs had increased 10% since 2001 (Dan Ciampa 2005). As a recent report from the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray Christmas points out, â€Å"The biggest challenge looming over corporate America [is] finding replacement CEOs.†(Dan Ciampa 2005) Take Coca Cola for an example, when the company lost its CEO Robert Goizueta in 1997, the two subsequent CEOs suffered in his shadow, as people expected them to perform the same way Goizueta did, however, leading as suggested earlier is the toughest job amongst all. Goizueta had guided Coke through its glorious years of the 1980s and the most of 1990s, leading it to perennially unrealistic expectations by shareholders. This is why change management is regarded as a tough job, because changes can occur in the external macro-environment and at the same time in the internal environment, as incase of Coke, whose CEO Robert Goizeuta died of cancer. And since then Coke has never been able to make up for the loss, and Pepsi has gained a significant market share since then. Jack Welch is probably the first name that comes to mind when we speak of transformational leaders. Richard Branson of the Virgin group is another very famous transformational leader (Robbins and Judge, 2005). When we speak of transactional and transformational leaders, they shouldn’t be considered or viewed as opposing approaches to getting things done. Transformational leadership is built on top of transactional leadership, as it produces levels of follower effort and performance that go beyond what would   with a transactional approach alone (Kotter, 1995). A transcational leader believes in exchange of rewards for effort as a major source of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. He rewards good performance, and recognizes accomplishments. He tries to identify deviations from rules and standards, and subsequently reverts to corrective measures, and intervenes only if he believes that the standards have not been met. Transactional leaders usually abdicate responsibilties to others empowering them but also avoiding to go throw the challenging phase of decision-making. Trasformational leaders, on the other hand, are charismatic by nature, i.e. they provide vision and sense of mission, instills pride, gains respect and trust of his followers (Kotter, 1995). But, transformational leadership is more than just charisma. Because all charismatic leaders would want is to make sure their followers share the same viewpoint on things as they do, whereas transformational leaders will try to instill in followers the ability to question views, views established by the leaders themselves. Transformational leaders act as a source of inspiration to their followers, communicating high expectations, using symbols to focus efforts, expressing important purposes in simple ways. Transformational leaders also promote intelligence, rationality and careful problem solving skills (Robbins and Judge, 2005). But the most obvious and impotant trait of a transformational leader is that they offer individualized considerations to their followers, giving them personal attention, treating them all individually, coaching and advising them on a one to one basis. The evidence supporting the superiority of transformational leadership over the transactional variety is overwhelmingly impressive. For instance, a number of studies were conducted with American, German and Canadian military officers, belonging to different ranks, and the eventual verdict was that transformational leaders were evaluated as more effective than their transactional counterparts. Similarly, managers at Federal Express who were rated by their followers as exhibiting more transformational leadership were evaluated by their immediate supervisors as higher performers and more promotable. Much has been written about leadership and the qualities that fuel leadership such as intelligence, passion, toughness, determination, ethics, credibility, integrity, vision, etc. Often left off are the lists softer and more personal qualities, but recent studies have proven that they are equally important. Researchers have proposed a new term called Emotional Intelligence, and it may well help differentiate the outstanding leaders from the merely adequate ones. Emotional intelligence is one of the major aspects of transformational leadership. This may be because, effective transformational leaders rely on the expression of feelings to help convey a message; therefore, they possess a higher level of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence helps leaders manage the mood of their organizations which is an integral part of the transformation process (Satterlee, 2007). Emotional intelligence is what makes transformational leaders self-aware and empathetic to a greater extent. They can read and regulate their own emotions while intuitively grasping how others feel and gauging their organization’s emotional state. According to Daniel Goleman, who conducted a lot of research on Emotional Intelligence, there are five main components to emotional intelligence. Self-awareness is the trait where emotional intelligence actually begins (Goleman, 1998). Transformational leaders with a greater degree of self-awareness are never hesitant to talk about and discuss their weaknesses and it is this attitude that later brings upon a positive change in them as they are able to improve upon such weaknesses with time. This helps a leader in bringing about a transformation as he is someone who knows his limitations and he knows when and where he can actually stand-up and deliver for the rest of the workforce and be a motivator for them, i.e. when can he lead by example. Thus he knows which tasks and changes can actually be brought about in an organization and which ones cannot. The second trait is self-regulation, and that leaders with this trait can control their emotions and impulses better and channel them for good purposes (Goleman, 1998). This brings about an openness to change and transformation in their attitude and behavior, and increases their trustworthiness and integrity, and also helps them remain comfortable in ambiguous situations and scenario. And this is what subordinates try to see in their leaders, especially in times of change and transformation. Motivation is perhaps the most important trait and the most obvious one that a leader is judged upon. It’s the motivational abilities of a leader that gives the sub-ordinates the notion that the leader has a strong drive to achieve. It portrays the optimism of the leader towards the followers, such that they know their leader would still be optimistic when facing failure, so it has to do more with the mind than anything else. It is the positivity of the mind, it emanates from the mind of the leader and leads its way to the minds of the followers (Michael Roberto and David Garvin 2005). Empathy is the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people. Empathy is the trait that enables a leader to be an expert in building and maintaining talent, something that is critical to the process of transformation. It enables him to treat people according to their emotional reactions. This is why he can be successful in getting the most out of the talented people that work under him, making him a better man manager. He is able to manage and lead people from various different backgrounds and cultures, belonging to various social and economic classes, i.e. it increases the cross-cultural sensitivity of the leader himself. With the businesses and economies globalizing, leaders have to lead and manage people belonging to different cultures which is the major reason why change management in such a scenario is very difficult, however, if only a leader can empathize with his followers, it makes the job half as difficult as before. The last trait that comes under emotional intelligence is the social skills of the leader. Transformational leaders need to be proficient in managing relationships and constructing networks that lead to effectiveness in change management ans transformation. Such a leader is able to find common ground between individuals and situations and scenarios and is able to build rapport. It also improves his persuasiveness and the ability to build and lead teams. A transformational leader combines emotional intelligence with the courage to raise the tough questions, challenge people’s assumptions about strategy and operations and risk losing their goodwill, i.e. he does not care about pleasing individuals but rather believes in the greater good of the company. A leader gets into trouble when there’s dissonance between the inside and outside what today we’d call a â€Å"disconnect.† (Mayer 2004) If a single theme runs through this issue, it’s the importance of keeping the two aligned. Every leader ought to want a more supple emotional intelligence, and â€Å"Leading by Feel† is a great place to begin (Mayer 2004). Another important tool in ensuring effective transformation is collaboration and good communication, which is essential and plays a vital role in process. All processes, practices and functionalities give more values to customer, goals and performance for achievement of goals. There should be internal solutions. Horizontal, Vertical and multi directional interaction must be carried out before change in organization. For a transformational leader, it is important to study the present culture of the organization and to know where one is. It is also necessary for a him to identify employees who want change and those who are not happy with the process of transformation. Take examples from existing model that has effectively implemented change and also communicate with them regarding their experience with transformation. The process has to be subtle and gradual, and a transformational approach would not demand immediate and complete change in the existing culture. Transformational approach to leadership also encourages one to seek advice from people about ways to implement change and methods to solve the problems while transformation. Applications of a Connectionist Model of Poetic Meter to Problems in Generative Metrics Meter is one of the most distinctive formal features of English verse. Yet theoretical approaches to metrical analysis have proved problematical for a number of reasons. Traditional metrics, based upon scansion systems derived from Latin forms, is strong and flexible in its ability to describe individual units of a line, but fails to describe well the dynamics of the line as a whole and the lexical and syntactic structures which underlie that line. Moreover, traditional metrics does not address the general issue of metricality: most lines of poetry show some variation from metrical norms through the substitution of irregular units (such as a trochee opening an iambic line). When do such variations, which are permissible in individual units, render the line as a whole unmetrical? Generative metrics does address these issues by analyzing underlying lexical and syntactic structures and formulating rules to describe allowable and unallowable metrical transgressions. In this way, th e theory defines metricality, distinguishing between lines which are metrical and those which are not. This approach has had some success, and yet counter-examples, lines which are unmetrical by its analysis but are found to be used by poets, have proved somewhat intractable. Generative metrics is not, moreover, well adapted to describing verse in its actual performance. While generative metrics does account for some of the factors that affect the metrical rhythm of a line of poetry, such as lexical stress and the syntactic structure of a textual unit, it does not have a place for other features which may impact on the amount of stress that a syllable receives in performance, such as rhyme, alliteration, repetition, and the reader's interpretation of the significance of the word in the poem. Any or all of these features may affect the speaker's decision to give a certain prominence to the word, a prominence which will be realized in performance by stress. Moreover, since stress is measured in comparison to adjacent units, the amount of stress given to one unit will affect other units in its immediate environment. One reader of Keats's line, 'My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains' may stress 'heart', rather than 'aches'; this will aff ect the amount of stress given to 'aches'.

How do composers use distinctively visual techniques to shape our interpretations of the world? Composers use distinctively visual techniques to shape the audiences interpretations of the world. John Misto’s play ‘The Shoe-horn Sonata and the RTA advertisement ‘Notes’ uses distinctively visual techniques such as dialogue, photographic images, and music to effectively shape the audiences interpretations of the world. Firstly Misto uses dialogue as a distinctively visual technique in his play ‘The Shoe Horn Sonata to shape the audiences interpretations of the world. Misto uses juxtaposition as the dialogue consists of both private and public conversations which create powerful links between the two characters. The first scene shows Bridie re-enacting the kowtow, a tribute to the emperor of Japan. This kowtow was done when a Japanese guard would cry out ‘Keirei’. Stage directions allow the readers to visualise exactly how the composer wants i t to be performed. The audience is able relate in some way and feels engaged with Bridie at this point. Misto then uses photographic images, projected on a screen behind Bridie to support the dialogue. These images consist of several 1940 posters for the womens army, as well as photographs of the Australian army nurses disembarking in Singapore. Not even halfway through scene 1 the use of dialogue and photographic images have raised a concern to the audience of the pain and suffering that many women endured at the hands of the Japanese, yet their stories were not widely known. This has shaped their interpretations of war vastly, as there is much more horror, truth and death involved then just men on the front line. In the RTA advertisement ‘Notes’ the use of no dialogue is so the importance of photographic images is essential for conveying the point of view of the advertisement, which is ‘slow down’. The photographic images show the last message left by each young person and the rush they are in. The images are shown in a slow motion effect which gives the audience time think of the situations and then evokes an emotional response. The images show the surroundings of where how the message was left, this shows that these people come from all different family backgrounds and have a relationship with members of their family. Therefore we realize that these rushing deaths can happen to anyone, regardless of who you are. This shapes the viewer’s interpretation of the world showing that rushing is not worth the consequences of speeding and therefore reinforces the importance of slowing  down. Lastly in ‘Shoe Horn Sonata’ Misto uses music from the period to go with images projected. The use of music adds emotion to the play and It places the audience in the historical context and in some parts it suggests the irony of the situations the women went through. An example is when Bridie criticises the British, the song ‘Rule Britannia’ is played. This song is very patriotic and helps us understand the irony of the situation. The use of music creates emotion within the audience helps shape their interpretation of war, as there is much more horror, truth and death involved then just men on the front line. In the RTA advertisement ‘Notes’ the slow solemn music is used to arouse emotion within the audience. This shapes the audiences interpretations of the world because the slow musical beat actually relaxes the audience therefore causing them to slow down and think about the consequences of speeding and the importance of not rushing. There are 8 principles to be followed when gathering data 1) processed fairly and lawfully 2) processed only for 1 or more lawful purpose 3) adequate and relevant 4) accurate and up to date 5) kept for no longer than necessary 6) processed in line with the right of the individual 7) secured against loss or damage 8) not transferred to countries out of EEA. 1.2 It is important to have secure systems for recording and storing information to prevent personal information from being misused. Any information that has been gathered is confidential but written evidence may be required by other professionals on occasions. Also if new staff members arrive they can read the care plans to gain all the information needed. 2.1 I would follow my company’s policies and procedures for guidance and advice about handling information but would also speak to my directors or Human resources office. Information can also be gained from government websites for advice or other professionals. 2.2 If there are concerns over the recording storing or sharing of information i would document and report my concerns and secure all the information immediately. 3.1 Agreed ways of working relates to the company’s and government policies in relation to Care Plans. All documents should be evaluated and reviewed regularly, updated as required, completed and legible so others are able to decipher them. 3.2 Agreed ways of working when a) Recording information; would be to follow the company’s and government policies to ensure all information gathered is accurate, legible, complete and confidential. b) Storing information; all information that is gathered should be stored in locked filing cabinets that are only accessible to the persons requiring access to information.

Teacher Merit Pay Benefits and Disadvantages Teaching unions around the United States are lessening their opposition to merit pay for teachers and finding new ways to experiment with the concept, passionate reactions erupted from teachers everywhere. So, what exactly are the pros and cons of paying teachers differently based on the results they produce in the classroom? The issue is complex. In fact, it has been debated for over 40 years in the world of education. The National Education Association (NEA) adamantly opposes merit pay, but is it an idea whose time has come? The Pros Americans value hard work and results, and our capitalist system hinges upon rewarding such results. Most professions offer bonuses and salary increases to exemplary employees. Why should teaching be the exception? The fact that a sloppy teacher and a dedicated teacher earn the same salary just doesn’t sit right with most people.Incentivized teachers will work harder and produce better results. What motivation do teachers currently have to go above and beyond the jobs basic requirements? The simple possibility of extra cash would most likely translate into smarter teaching and better results for our children.Merit Pay programs will help recruit and retain the nation’s brightest minds. It’s the odd teacher who hasn’t considered leaving the classroom and entering the corporate workplace for the twin benefits of less hassle and more money potential. Particularly intelligent and effective teachers might reconsider leaving the profession if they felt that their extraordinary efforts were being recognized in their paychecks. Teachers are already underpaid. Merit Pay would help address this injustice. Teaching is due for a renaissance of respect in this country. How better to reflect the esteemed way we feel about educators than through paying them more? And the highest performing teachers should be first in line for this financial recognition.We are in the middle of a teaching shortage. Merit pay would inspire potential teachers to give the profession more consideration as a viable career choice, rather than a personal sacrifice for the higher good. By tying teaching salaries to performance, the profession would look more modern and credible, thus attracting young college graduates to the classroom.With American schools in crisis, shouldn’t we be open to trying almost anything new in the hopes of making a change? If the old ways of running schools and motivating teachers aren’t working, perhaps it’s time to think outside of the box and try Merit Pay. In a time of crisis, no valid ide as should be quickly denied as a possible solution. The Cons Virtually everyone agrees that designing and monitoring a Merit Pay program would be a bureaucratic nightmare of almost epic proportions. Many major questions would have to be adequately answered before educators could even consider implementing Merit Pay for teachers. Such deliberations would inevitably take away from our real goal which is to focus on the students and give them the best education possible.Goodwill and cooperation among teachers will be compromised. In places that have previously tried variations of Merit Pay, the results have often been unpleasant and counter-productive competition between teachers. Where teachers once worked as a team and shared solutions cooperatively, Merit Pay can make teachers adopt a more â€Å"I’m out for myself only† attitude. This would be disastrous for our students, no doubt.Success is difficult, if not impossible, to define and measure. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has already proven how the various unleveled playing fields in the American education system inherently set up a wide variety of standards and expectations. Consider the diverse needs of English Language Learners, Special Education Students, and low-income neighborhoods, and you’ll see why it would be opening a messy can of worms to define standards of success for American schools when the stakes are cash in the pockets of real teachers. Opponents to Merit Pay argue that a better solution to the current educational crisis is to pay all teachers more. Rather than design and regulate a messy Merit Pay program, why not simply pay teachers what they are already worth?High-stakes Merit Pay systems would inevitably encourage dishonesty and corruption. Educators would be financially motivated to lie about testing and results. Teachers might have legitimate suspicions of principal favoritism. Complaints and lawsuits would abound. Again, all of these messy morality issues serve only to distract from the needs of our students who simply need our energies and attention to learn to read and succeed in the world.​ So what do you think now? With issues as complicated and evocative as Merit Pay, ones position can be naturally nuanced. In the big picture, all that really matters is the learning that happens with our students when the rubber meets the road in our classrooms. Dates: about 1533 - about 1600Occupation: Queen of ZazzauAlso Known as: Amina Zazzau, princess of ZazzauReligion: Muslim Sources of the History of Amina Oral tradition includes many stories about Amina of Zazzau, but scholars generally accept that the stories are based on a real person who ruled Zazzau, a Hausa city-state which is now Zaria province in Nigeria. The dates of Aminas life and rule are in dispute among scholars.  Some place her in the 15th century and some in the 16th.  Her story does not appear in writing until Muhammed Bello wrote of her accomplishments in the  Ifaq al-Maysur  which dates to 1836. The Kano Chronicle, a history written in the 19th century from earlier sources, mentions her as well, putting her rule in the 1400s. She is not mentioned in the list of rulers written from oral history in the 19th century and published in the early 20th, though the ruler Bakwa Turunka  appears there, Aminas mother. Amina, born in the city of Zazzau, was trained in skills of government and military warfare and fought in battles with her brother, Karama. In 1566, when Bakwa died, Aminas younger brother Karama became king. In 1576 when Karama died, Amina, now about 43, became Queen of Zazzau. She used her military prowess to expand the territory of Zazzau to the mouth of the Niger in the south and including Kano and Katsina in the north. These military conquests led to great wealth, both because they opened more trading routes and because conquered territories had to pay tribute. She is credited with building walls around her camps during her military ventures, and with building a wall around the city of Zaria.  Mud walls around cities became known as Aminas walls. Amina is also credited with initiating the cultivation of kola nuts in the area she ruled. While she never married perhaps imitating Queen Elizabeth I of England and had no children, legends tell of her taking, after a battle, a man from among the enemy, and spending the night with him, then killing him in the morning so he could tell no stories. Amina ruled for 34 years before her death. According to the legend, she was killed in a military campaign near Bida, Nigeria. In Lagos State, at the National Arts Theatre, there is a statue of Amina.  Many schools are named for her.
